Meet Mary a Strong and Resilient Woman

Stories

From Silence to Strength

For years, Mary lived in silence. Behind closed doors, she endured gender-based violence and the weight of financial hardship. Each day felt the same: uncertain, heavy, and isolating. She had no safe space, no support system, and no voice.

Like many women, she carried her pain quietly, believing this was simply her reality. Everything began to change when Mary found NOW Kenya. At first, it was just a meeting in a room full of women sitting together. Listening. Sharing. Understanding.

For the first time, Mary spoke. Through counseling and the support of other women who had walked similar paths, she slowly began to rebuild herself—piece by piece. She rediscovered her confidence. She found her voice. She began to believe that her life could be different.

Through NOW Kenya, she found community, healing, and the courage to speak. With training in tailoring, she built a small business—stitch by stitch—transforming her life. Today, Mary runs her own tailoring shop, earns a steady income, and supports other women to rise.

Mary’s story is proof that when women are supported, they don’t just survive — they rise.

Meet Amina — Breaking Barriers

Breaking Barriers, Building Independence

Amina grew up in a close-knit Somali community in Kenya, where traditions are deeply valued and respected.

But within those traditions, opportunities for women were often limited. From a young age, Amina was expected to focus on her home and family.

Education and financial independence were not always encouraged, and stepping into business was seen as uncommon for women in her community. Yet, Amina carried a quiet determination. She wanted more — not just for herself, but for her children. When she connected with NOW Kenya, everything began to shift.

Through mentorship, training, and support, Amina gained the confidence to step into a space she had once felt was out of reach. She learned how to manage finances, source products, and run a business. With that support, she started her own small spice shop.

Today, Amina stands proudly behind her business—earning her own income, supporting her family, and inspiring other women in her community to believe that they, too, can rise.

Amina’s journey is not just about business — it is about breaking barriers, challenging limitations, and redefining what is possible for women.
